What is reiki and how can it benefit you?
Reiki may be hands on or hovering above the body.
Reiki is a gentle, holistic healing practice that works with the body’s natural energy system to promote balance and well-being. The modern version of Reiki originated in Japan in the early 1900s. Reiki was founded by Dr. Mikao Usui, who sought a way to support physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing through connection to universal life energy. There are accounts of Reiki-like healing energy going back as far as thousands of years in the areas where India and Tibet are now located. Life force healing energy is as old as time and there are many beautiful theories that we are genetically wired to harness this once attuned to it.
The word Reiki (pronounced “ray-kee”) combines two Japanese terms: Rei, meaning “universal” or “spiritual,” and Ki, meaning “life force energy.” This life energy flows through all living things—similar to the concepts of chi in Chinese medicine or prana in yoga philosophy. When our energy is flowing freely, we feel balanced, vital, and at ease. When it becomes blocked or depleted—often due to stress, grief, or disconnection—we may feel fatigue, tension, or emotional heaviness. Reiki helps to gently clear and rebalance this energy so the body and mind can return to their natural state of harmony.
During a session, I channel this healing energy through my hands, either by lightly touching or hovering just above the body. You remain fully clothed and simply relax as the energy flows where it is most needed. Many people experience a deep sense of calm, warmth, tingling sensations, or emotional release during and after a session. I might also use Reiki symbols and other tools to help intensify the healing and offer energetic protection.
Reiki is now practiced around the world and integrated into hospitals, wellness centers, and holistic care programs as a complementary approach to healing. It does not replace medical treatment, but rather supports it by activating the body’s natural healing response, reducing stress, improving sleep, and promoting emotional clarity.
In our modern world—where constant stimulation and digital noise can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves and others—Reiki offers a moment of stillness. It invites us to slow down, to come home to our breath, and to reconnect with the quiet wisdom of the body.
Reiki reminds us that healing is not about fixing what is broken—it’s about returning to balance, remembering our wholeness, and reconnecting with the peaceful energy that is always available within and around us.
