How to make a cup of ceremonial cacao

Cacao: Nature’s medicine for the body, mind and soul

Cacao contains theobromine and caffeine, which can be stimulating for some. You can always start with a lower dose and work yourself up to a higher one if you feel more comfortable. Even a small dose of cacao allows you to experience all of its beneficial effects!

  1. Measure out the amount of cacao you want to make (15-25 grams is a ‘normal’ daily dose, a ‘ceremonial dose’ is usually 30-45 grams)- using a scale can be helpful!

  2. Heat your water to about 180 degrees but not higher. You want to retain the health benefits of the cacao and scalding it can affect that (and the taste).

  3. I recommend trying cacao without a sweetener just once to experience it! But feel free to add a sweetener -honey or maple syrup is recommended as natural and delicious options.

  4. You can also add spices- cinnamon, cardamom, and cayenne work nicely with cacao.

  5. If you want to add a creamy element to your drink, non-dairy and nut milks work beautifully. Ensure not to use dairy milk as it counteracts the beneficial effects of cacao.

  6. Go forth and FROTH! Mix the cacao and all elements together by using a blender or electric frother for the best consistency. If you don’t have a blender or frother, you can add the hot water in increments and stir as you go.

  7. Lastly, remember to connect with the spirit of cacao and give gratitude! Breathe and connect with your heart space. Setting an intention for your experience also deepens your practice.

  8. You can also try journaling about how you feel before and after drinking cacao to start to track the effect it has on your mood, emotions, gratitude, and feelings of connection.
